Description
The U.S. railroad network includes tens of thousands of bridges. Each individual railroad in the nation is responsible for ensuring the safety of these bridges per the Federal regulations contained in 49 CFR Part 237. The Federal Railroad Administration’s (FRA) Office of Railroad Safety is tasked with ensuring compliance with these regulations and, in parallel, the Office of Research and Development is tasked with advancing the state of knowledge and technology regarding railroad bridge inspection technology, inspection techniques, and data management. With recent advances in sensor design, edge computing, and machine learning technologies there is an opportunity to improve the accuracy and timeliness of railroad bridge condition assessments and load ratings. The demonstration of this new prototype technology on a varied set of in-service bridges will advance the state of the art in the bridge inspection industry.
