Description
The Leadville water treatment plant processes 1.5-2.5 million gallons per day of water from the Leadville Mine Drainage Tunnel (LMDT) to remove dissolved zinc, manganese, iron, and other trace metals in accordance with EPA discharge permit standards. The contaminated mine water is taken from the LMDT via pumping it from three dewatering wells. Due to the contaminants in the water, the well screens on wells 1 and 2 and the impellers on all three pumps become obstructed over time with carbonate, sulfide, and metal precipitates. Regular scheduled bi-annual maintenance for Wells 1 and 2, and annual maintenance at Well 3 is critical to ensure reliable dewatering and treatment of the contaminated mine water drained by the LMDT.
