Description
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Radiation Safety Activity plans to decommission the former Lawrenceville Radiological Waste (RAW) Burial Site which is located on the CDC Lawrenceville site at 602 Webb Gin House Road, Lawrenceville, Georgia. In accordance with regulations established by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) in 10 CFR 30.36, we are required to decommission the entire site or in any separate building or outdoor area that potentially contains residual radioactivity.Since no radioactive materials have been used, stored, or disposed on this site or campus since 1992, and the RAW Burial Facility has been demolished and remediated since April 1992, the Radiation Safety Activity will have this area decommissioned to ensure it meets the criteria, as established by the NRC in 10 CFR 20.1402, Radiological Criteria for Unrestricted Use, to be released for unrestricted use.Based on the information provided in the newly found assessment, including the estimated location of the Former Burial Site, we propose to conduct another set of Final Status Surveys via Gamma Walkover and soil sampling in accordance with NUREG 1575, "Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual" (MARSSIM) protocols and provide the requisite additional information for a comprehensive Final Status Survey Report (FSSR) suitable for submission to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). To facilitate the decommissioning process of the Lawrenceville RAW Burial Site, the Radiation Safety Team will need the assistance of a specialized health physics services vendor to perform the decommissioning operations.
