Description

The Sheldon Road Profile Raising & Bridge Replacement Project (Project) is located along Sheldon Road, on the community border of Brook Park and Middleburg Heights. The project is located within the Abram Creek watershed, a tributary to the Rocky River. Local flooding occurs as early as the 2-year storm event along a portion of Sheldon Road, between Eastland Road and Engle Road, leading to impassable flooding of Sheldon Road. A contributing factor to the flooding is the existing cast-in-place reinforced concrete rigid frame (box) structure beneath Sheldon Road, which is in a state of deterioration. The project involves the construction of a 60' single span prestressed concrete box beam bridge to replace the existing box culvert. This design will result in a bridge structure with a profile set above the 100-year water surface elevation. The Project will also involve raising the profile of a 1,060-feet length of Sheldon Road by an average of 2.97-feet (maximum elevation change 5.53-feet). The raised roadway consists of 2 - 11 ft. lanes with 2 - 4 ft shoulders, 30 ft. total width, with a 1.25 ft wide parapet that does not extend beyond the bridge approach slab. The design includes a 10 ft wide sidewalk across the north side of the bridge/approach slabs and 5 ft. sidewalk on the north roadway approaches. The objective of this project is to address the structural deterioration of the existing box culvert and improve the conveyance of stormwater flows up to the 100-year design storm, elimination the overtopping of Abram Creek onto Sheldon Road.
