Description
The study is located along the west side of the Salton Sea on routes 78 and 86 in Imperial County and extends 10 miles into Riverside to address priority issues in the vicinity of Torres Martinez Desert Cahuilla Indians. Study area roadway segments are experiencing an increasing number of recurring washouts and flooding events due to larger/more frequent precipitation events (expected to increase 8.2% by 2085) and may cost the state millions. In the last ten years District 11 has spent nearly $5 million on nine (9) separate washout/flooding Director¿s Orders (DO) emergency projects in the study area, reaffirming the need for a long-term solution to proactively address these climate impacts while ensuring that unnecessary expenditures are limited. This increasing number of events may lead to damaged infrastructure, road closures, delays, and potentially dangerous roadway conditions for the surrounding tribal lands and disadvantaged communities. Additionally, these impacts combined may reduce access to key community amenities in surrounding cities and tribal lands such as employment centers, healthcare, and schools.
