Description
State and Federal Project No. SFHWY00196/0902045 The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is proposing to rehabilitate and make improvements to the Tongass Avenue and Water Street Viaduct structures (Bridges #997 and #797) and the South Tongass Highway Tunnel (Bridge #7730) in Ketchikan, Alaska. With the support of Landslide Technology, a geotechnical investigation will be conducted to provide geologic and geotechnical information to support the design of embankment fill that will replace the Water Street abandoned structure. Work would include the following activities: • Two (2) borings to characterize subsurface materials at the abandoned structure • Three (3) cores to investigate the presence and extent of voids along with asphalt thickness • An additional eight (8) cores to measure thickness on Tongass Avenue to support pavement renovation designs The investigation is planned to take place in late August, with the total duration of drilling and coring work taking an estimated 4-5 days. Due to the busy corridor of Tongass Avenue and Water Street, night work is anticipated for this investigation effort with tentative work hours of 10:00 PM to 6:00 AM. The project team coordinated with the City of Ketchikan to obtain a Noise Ordinance Permit to perform this work. All lanes and sidewalks will be open and unaffected during the day and non-work hours.
