Description
Project # SFHWY00686 The Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) is proposing to replace and realign the temporary Montana Creek pedestrian bridge located at the end of Montana Creek Road in Juneau, Alaska. DOT&PF and the support of Northern Region drilling services will conduct a geotechnical investigation to support design efforts for future replacement of the bridge and new road construction. Work will include the following activities: • Six (6) foundation borings; • An additional four (4) borings or test pits may be required for new road construction to connect the relocated bridge to the existing road (total number of borings and their final locations may change at the time of the investigation); • Create an access road and drill pad to access the proposed Abutment 1 and 2 locations. Target tree clearing would be required and limited to only what is necessary to allow access. Since minimal tree clearing is needed to create access for equipment, temporary closure of the Montana Creek pedestrian bridge may be needed, or a single flagger may be on the bridge to safely get users across. Normal use of the bridge and trail should be possible during drilling activities. The investigation is planned for the end of July and may take a total of 18 days to complete, working 10-12 hours a day, from civil dawn to civil dusk. The environmental review, consultation, and other actions required by applicable Federal environmental laws for this project are being, or have been, carried out by DOT&PF pursuant to 23 U.S.C. 327 and a Memorandum of Understanding dated April 13, 2023, and executed by FHWA and DOT&PF.
